Your eye examination follows a set pattern:

  • History

  • Problems you are having with your eyes. What sort of glasses/contacts you have had before. Any eye disease in the past. Family history of eye disease, glasses etc. General health and medications.

  • Refraction

  • This involves measuring unaided vision, determining your refractive error (ie. glasses prescription) and measuring corrected vision. Eye muscle balance, colour vision etc. are also examined, where necessary.

  • Eye Health

  • Specialised equipment is used to examine the surface of the eye and the internal parts of the eye for detection of eye disease. This includes examining for glaucoma and cataracts. A camera is often used to record certain eye conditions.

  • Diagnosis

  • The state of your vision is discussed and if corrective lenses are recommended, the type and cost is discussed in detail. Eye health is also discussed and if necessary you may be advised to return for further tests or be referred to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) for further investigation.
Although eye disease can occur at any age, it is more likely that it will show as we become older. At Forsight Optometrist we screen for glaucoma from the age of 35 years. Measurement of peripheral vision (visual fields) is carried out as a routine part of the examination on everyone of driving age (ie. 15yrs and older).
Re examination is recommended at least every 2 years, or sooner in the case of certain eye conditions, or for some children. Regular eye examinations ensure that devastating conditions such as glaucoma, can be detected early and therefore successfully treated. Contact lens wearers are advised to have annual examinations. Any contact lens prescription given, is for one year only.
